new woo woo for youu

Saw a good one, commercial for hair loss victims.

New Hi tech method of hair restoration...LASERS!!

They had this hat like thing, shaped like a hand with rows n rows of what appeared to be laser diodes ( output~1.5-5 MW) and claimed hair growth. I guess it's the old infrared heat induced capillary dilation thing, which have been quacked about for years as a pain reliever...<sigh> The only good use for these things are to annoy your friends ( gets old quick ) or reading bar codes.

Google turns up this:

Laser hair transplants

Laser hair restoration

Quote:
Just prior to surgery, the donor area (typically the areas on the sides and back of the head containing healthy hair growth) is trimmed short to allow for easy access and removal of the grafts. For most grafts, the surgeon will use a scalpel to remove small sections of hair-bearing scalp from the donor sites. These are then divided into small sections and transplanted into tiny slits within the balding or thinning areas of the head. While the grafts are typically spaced about one-eighth of an inch apart, the resulting spaces are usually filled in with additional grafts in later sessions. During this process, the surgeon may periodically inject small quantities of a saline solution into the scalp for proper skin strength.

I don't think Till is talking about laser hair grafting.

Was this the gadget you saw?

New Laser Therapy Helps Regrow Hair
Procedure Stimulates Cell Metabolism, Company Says

UPDATED: 9:43 a.m. EDT July 30, 2003

BINGHAM FARMS, Mich. -- Millions of people suffer with some sort of hair loss. It may be caused by a medical condition, genetics, or excessive use of hair-coloring products or braiding.

There are products, transplants and wigs to help give people a full head of hair, but now a new therapy is zapping hair back into growing by helping to stimulate cell metabolism and increase blood flow to the scalp.

< snip >

The customer sits under a machine, which is similar to a hair dryer at the beauty parlor. The laser delivers light energy to the head and helps increase the blood flow to the scalp. The light also stimulates cell metabolism and causes damaged cells to be repaired.
Whether it works or not, it's $1,300 a pop.

I saw a variation of this, called a Laser Comb. Probably a lot cheaper.

Very odd. If light stimulates hair growth, why wouldn't sunlight do the trick?

This laser restoration is a little different from laser surgery used in hair transplants.

Yeah, OK! Like arcticpenguin said, why not just get a sunburn?

Wow. If you see it again, tell us the name of the company. Somehow this reminds me of Ronco...

There was a big ad for this in our local paper back in January. You could order online for only $245 down and 4 monthly payments of $112.50 from www.hairmax.com

The ad seemed quite truthful: safe (complies with FDA laser requirements), can be used by itself or along with other treatments (but why, I wonder, would you need other treatments?). And I really believe it can energize hair, just like my plastic comb does on a dry day.

I sure do hope that "MW" (megawatts) is a typo, and that you really meant "mW" (milliwatts).
