Help! A Numerologist is Coming to Town!

Quickly: this morning I saw numerologist Nick Newmont on a local "news" channel and I learned he'll be at Borders in Scottsdale, AZ signing books tonight at 7 pm.

I'm going down there to hand out informational flyers about how numerology is ridiculous and a waste of money, but all I have for reference so far is skepdic.com

Please help me have a successful outing of the truth tonight. All sources and suggestions are welcome.

His book.

P.S. He is a liar and a bad man.

Would you be able to get away with delivering a swift kick in the nuts to this guy? If not - good luck with the rest of your operation!

As far as links go, try searching the JREF forum archive for a few... I know it's been talked about before and some interesting links provided but I don't remember them.

Skepdic is a good site and you probably noticed there are related links posted at the bottom of the numerology page on skepdic.com.

again, good luck, let us know how it goes

Basically the scoop is that given 24 hours I could research and design a handout that would be just super, but that I'm working and have only 4 hours to go. So I'm doing it in nibbles here and there. I'm much better at debunking Christianity, so I'm a little out of practice w/ numerology.

Would like to kick him, tho'.

If you divide the 24 hours you need by the 4 hours you have, you get 6. Add on 1 to represent the unique Nick Newmont and you get 7. That's the time he will be signing the books! Spooky or what!

And to think people try to pretend that there's nothing in numerology...

Woh - you said 7! I was watching a program on psychic detectives last night and the psychic saw the number 7! This kind of synchronicity can not be chalked up to coincidence. Ceptimus, I strongly recommend that you foster your proven psychic potential.

Probably not. I guess they shouldn't promote this guy's book, then.

Oh! I'm sorry! I forgot that this was a well-researched book, and that his appearance on the morning news didn't remind me of a sucky JE with a dumber schtick. Sheesh.

Borders is a bookstore. Guess what they sell?

They aren't concerned with scientific completeness, or reality, etc., they are concerned with selling books.

People go there to buy books, and "books" means all types of books.

But by all means, crusade and try to get the metaphysical section of Borders removed.

Uh, who said I was trying to get the section removed? I just think that the patrons of Borders deserve someone telling them the truth, as well. The end.

So the massive amounts of numerology books in the metaphysical section is OK with you?

T'ai Chi, I know what you're trying to do, and I don't like it. You are trying to make me say something like "we should burn all the metaphysical (or numerology) books!" or something equally stupid.

I'm the son of a librarian, for Ba'al's sake - I don't want the books obliterated. I just want potential buyers of said books to be informed that they're wasting their money.
Caveat emptor, don't you know.

And now I am off to go do this thing. If any AZ JREFers want to join me, I'm the young guy in the jeans and blue & white striped shirt.

Hope it goes well for you.

My eldest daughter worked at a Borders here in the L.A. area, and was sickened by the amount of JE books and such that they sold.

Again: What does Borders do? They sell books. They don't do anything else (besides have good food and music that is!). It isn't up to Borders to be Skepti-police to the contents of their books.

Oh gosh, Amazon sells it too, you better go tell them that this man is a "liar".

If you are claiming he is a fraud, why on Earth aren't you going to a law enforcemeny agency with your startling revelations??

I would personally try and set up some experiment where you can test the predictions from numerology.

T'ai Chi, I wouldn't bother getting too upset. My ex-roommate was in book sales and they loved stuff like that. Nothing like a quick appearance on the evening news to bring in more customers.

Whodini, you stupid troll...

To you, it's OK that Borders is benefitting from a con man, but it's wrong that someone wants to educate people about the con?

What, do you have any stakes in numerology, or do you yourself prey off of peoples' gullibility?

I'd just ignore Whodini (Tai Chi). He's a troll who isn't very smart.

I'm saying that Borders is a bookstore, and they sell books. If you think they are helping promote fraud, etc., then by all means, report them to the nearest law enforcement agency.

It's not really adhominem if it's true and shows your intent.

I'm saying that Borders is a bookstore, and they sell books. If you think they are helping promote fraud, etc., then by all means, report them to the nearest law enforcement agency.

Because of the unfalsifiable nature of their claims, one cannot persecute them for fraud. In law, they are innocent until proven guilty. The "entertainment" disclaimers in those books also ensure that the authors of the book can't be sued for fraud.

So, instead of persuing law-enforcement cases that we'd lose, skeptics sometimes just want to educate the public. Sure, many won't like what the skeptic says, but if he saves one person from the lie of numerology, then it's worth it.

You don't like the skeptic going to Borders, but you can't stop him either, and that's a good thing.

Hey, T'ai. Here's some cold cream and and old pair of my thongs. Wipe the grease-paint off your face. Your act failed from the minute you got on the stage.

What are you contributing here? Your statistics "expertise"? Right. Your understanding of sciences, say, like "geophysics"? Sure. Your understanding is... well, laughable.

Numerology is magick. The belief system is specious at best. For one who claims two degrees in mathematics to fail to understand that that is the basic point here is humerous, at best.

So how'd it go?

Did you convert anyone? Show anyone the Bright light?

Did anyone disagree with you?

Did you report that man or Borders to law enforcement agencies?

Let us know..

Care to compare degrees? I'll scan mine in and post them. We'll compare them to your, probably, zero. Care to play?

Ahh, I disagree. "government" is such a vague, broad, completely meaningless blanket term people throw around to dismiss everything. The parts of the government that deal with science (and there are A LOT) are probably the smartest people on the planet.

I actually enjoy these funny pics. Thanks! Keep em' coming.

But, you're obviously avoiding my remarks Lord Kenneth. You've called me an idiot, etc., but then don't wish to compare degrees to see where each of us stand in terms of education and accomplishments.

Immature, I know, but no more immature then you calling me out and then retreating like a turtle. Carry on.

Education does not determine how intelligent, how rationally one thinks.

I don't care if you are a rocket scientists, Woo-Whodini, you're still an idiot and a troll.

Oh, why not educate both me and BillHoyt, and answer his inquiries?

Come on, degrees or lack of degrees doesnt make what a person has to say any more less important. Play nice.

I agree with that 100% Yahweh.

But if someone calls me stupid, etc., I will stick up for myself and say "Hey, I'm educated, more than the average, and can prove it. Are you and can you??"

And, not so surprisingly, they don't respond....

Fallacious reasoning is fallacious reasoning. Specious. Faulty. Shoddy.

Stop wasting bandwith and answer essential questions. Start reasoning or leave again.

There's no shame in a teenager not having a degree.

What is shameful is trying to trade on the status of those who have actually worked and learned to get a degree, by claiming qualifications you do not have.

Understand me?
