My 2004 Prediction has come true...Commercials now will play your video.

That way advertisers can still be sure that customers are seeing their offer and the free-TV system can survive.

That also includes music. If things don't change...I wouldn't be surprised to hear short voice over ads or sounds in music. For example..."Have you driven a Ford lately?" playing at a random point in some future album by Janet Jackson.
As announced by Youtube last month...2008 will see them doing exactly this.

If only I could attribute to psychic power...

In a semi-related note, every couple of years lobbyist's get someone in congress to propose legislation that would make it illegal to skip the 10 minutes of advertisements that appear at the beginning of some DVD's

How have their efforts at making movie rental as illegal as CD and computer program rental going?

In Japan you can rent movies (videos or DVDs) and music CDs, but not console games. IIRC, in the US you can rent console games but not music CDs. I wonder why the difference? Simply because the game industry has relatively more clout here?

Wow, how ever did you see that one coming, Nostradamus? What tipped you off other than, you know, world-wide trends for the last fifty years?

NBC is back this fall season with the same great shows you reluctantly watched last year! "Heroes" adds to its already sprawling cast. Is there love in the stars for Pam and Jim? Watch the show everyone is talking about -- the new Bionic Woman!

Good banner.

For my money, the 70's version of Bionic Woman didn't need a remake. It was just fine in the grave, where it belonged.

The Six Million Dollar Man will be resurrected as a night time drama about the life and times of a journeman NBA player, on ESPN2 this winter

Let me say something about Lindsay Wagner: I'd do her, but only on a Sleep Number bed. My setting is 31, her setting is 38, but together it's magic. Later we can invite Amanda to jump up and down and not spill a glass of red wine.

Could a mod edit the word "over" into the topic line in the appropriate place? ("will now play over your video") Thanks.

Actually, this was more common in the 50's (commercials during the program, and hosts taking time to talk about a sponsor) than later. It hasn't been a direct increase that would make a prediction easy. Furthermore, there are alternative scenarios that could have occurred. Also, I've included that product placement or advertisements will begin during songs and music, which has no major precedent to my knowledge.

Gracias...I'm interested to see if/when the music industry takes this huge step.

DVD content is paid for by the consumer, so I don't see how they have a leg to stand on compared to television, which must rely on advertising. Seems like they're just looking for a way to get congress to back them up by enforcing uniform standards of lesser-quality for more money for the company.

This has naturally been anticipated for a long while, so I do not see how your prediction is remotely novel. Why do people buy a Tivo? 1) Because it makes nonsense of "appointment" television; 2) They can skip over the commercials. Huge media conglomerates are naturally hostile to such technologies, and this is essentially a replay of the video tape argument from the 80s. Product placement has been around for a long while, and was notably criticized back in the 80s by Mark Crispin Miller (among others). We've also seen more and more advertisements for regular products before movies in the last ten years at theaters. People have been speculating about advertisements in books.

I'll grant you this prediction, provided you're claiming that a product advertisement will appear mid-song, and I don't mean a corporation paying the "artists" to sneak something into her lyrics, but an actual disruptive advertisement over the music. People will not tolerate that. Everyone is making the transition to MP3 and editing software will allow user-created versions to be superior to the sold copy. Saying "buy a Ford" has been done. On the Colbert Report Stephen poked fun at Tobey Keith for including a Ford advertisement in the CD booklet.

Companies argue that they have multiple revenue streams, and commercial sponsorship keeps the prices of DVDs low for the consumer in the first place. People pay for products by devoting their time and attention to an advertiser. Also, see the above Keith example: do you think it should be illegal for his record label to put in the advertisement since you're paying for the CD? If anything I lean toward the "prediction" that entertainment media companies will move more toward licensing their content to regular consumers so that people do not actually "own" stuff in the manner they are accustomed.

I have in my possession an album called "Flaunt It" by Sigue Sigue Sputnik, released in 1986, which has adverts between the tracks. It was big news in the UK at the time.
